Year 2020 - Energy Efficiency Year

Year 2020 - Energy Efficiency Year

At its meeting on February 20, the government approved the proposal to sign a financing agreement between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the European Commission on Energy Efficiency and Environment.

“The issue of energy saving should have a strategic priority for us. This is an economic issue, it is a matter of energy safety and security," RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated.

The main purpose of the document is to support initiatives aimed at energy efficiency and environmental protection in Armenia. It is envisaged to increase energy efficiency levels in existing buildings, particularly in multi-apartment buildings, as well as in public buildings, non-gasified communities, and low-income households.

The agreement was presented to the members of the government by RA Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan. “Loans for energy savings will be offered, 17 million grants are earmarked for these loans, the percentage of which will be zero - mostly retail loans. I think that's the most effective way. 17 million is a very serious budget, it can give zero interest rate effect for 100 million loan portfolios. Another 3.7 million are intended for the formation of regulatory framework."

In response to Nikol Pashinyan's question, whether we can announce 2020 as a year of energy efficiency, Mher Grigoryan said “yes”.

RA Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan stressed that the implementation of the energy efficiency program should address the issues of seismic safety of buildings. Mher Grigoryan responded that this component is included in the document.
