Public Environmental Court Recognized Violations Committed in Forest Sector as Crime Directed Against Nature, Humanity and State

Upon the initiative of “EcoLur” informational NGO, the Public Environmental Court examined the case on the violations in the forest ecosystem in Armenia based on the application submitted by Ani Khachatryan, a member of Armenian Environmental Front civic initiative.

The member judges were environmental lawyer Nazeli Vardanyan, human rights defender Zaruhi Hovhannisyan, President of 'Association for Sustainable Human Development' NGO Karine Danielyan and President of 'EcoLur' Informational NGO Inga Zarafyan.

During the public trial, the participation and liability of the competent bodies of Armenia for loss of forest-covered areas, degradation of forest areas, replacement of high-value tree species with low-value species, loss of unique forest landscapes and biodiversity, activation of erosion and landslide processes and drying up of springs as a result of poor management of forests were discussed.

According to applicant Ani Khachatryan, only in 2014-2016 Armenian Environmental Front civic initiative detected over 3000 illegally felled down trees by the group of volunteers established within the frames of Public Monitoring of Forests project.

The witnesses were Aram Gabrielyan - a representative of “Khazer” Environmental and Cultural NGO, ex employee of ArmForest SNCO in Lori Region Hovik Sahakyan, Kotayq-based “Healthy Hrazdan” civic initiative member Movses Manukyan, Teghout community resident in Tavush Region Tatev Harutyunyan and Hayk Grigoryan, a member of “Eco House and Camp” Initiative.
