Poqr Mantash Community in Shirak Region has found itself in a hard situation, as the the problem of the heating in the community is not solved. ‘Our village is really experiencing problems with the heating, as the sale of the wood has been banned. It’s already snowing, but 90% of the people don’t have fuel wood. The problem of the heating in the communities in Artik Region is terrible,’ Poqr Mantash Community Head Zhirayr Hakobyan said.
The forests in Armenia have been cut down and are being cut down ruthlessly. According to the expert data, the annual demand for fuel wood is around 650,000 cum, when the amount of the permitted felling is not more than 30-35,0000 cum. The state has been heavily combating illegal tree felling in the specifically protected areas of nature, and, as a result, the villages have been facing the problem of obtaining fuel wood.
The preservation of the forests in Armenia shall be a priority for us. We don’t have forests of industrial significance. The forests in Armenia have merely preservative significance and we are not entitled to burn down this forest in the ovens. The state shall take urgent measures and propose alternative heating programs to the communities, which face the problem to resist the cold. It’s a known fact that socially insecure communities don’t use gas either because of high fees or not having any gas supply at all. Only a few well-to-do families use gas in the villages.
What about the problem of Poqr Mantash, it should be mentioned that a gas supply project was implemented in the community in 2011, as the community head said, but the pipeline was laid 4 kilometers less than needed. “We have filed repetitions to the president and the prime minister of the republic, they have promised to take some actions, but nothing has been done so far,” Poqr Mantash Community Head Zhirayr Hakobyan said.
