Scientists Divided into Two Groups – For and Against Cleaning Lake Sevan Shores from Forests

The shores of Lake Sevan are cleaned from forests in an area of 1,152 ha, the total forest-covered area on the shores makes up about 4000 ha. Meanwhile 125 ha was left under water, which will be cleaned in 2013. This statement was made by the Chairman of Scientific-Expert Committee on Lake Sevan Preservation Vladimir Movsisyan. He said, “When the need for shore cleaning generated, the scientists divided into two groups, the first group was for leaving forests under water, as eventually they would turn into organics, while the other group supported cleaning, and I was in that group. We tried to trust this process to the locals, but they shop down trees, while thorny bushes were left. Annually 100-120 ha of territory is cleaned, while the roots are left, because they can’t be pulled out. There tractors, bulldozers and heavy machinery are needed to pull out these roots.”
