The town municipality has covered all intracommunity roads, the yards of schools, kindergartens and residential buildings with 110 tons of slug produced by the copper smelting combine owned by “Armenian Copper Program”. After snow smelting the town was buries under the slug with all the dangers it contains.

Reminder: In 2013 the AUA Public Health Faculty in collaboration with the American Blacksmith institute researched the health and environmental risks in Alaverdi and found out that the slug generated due to the production of the copper smelting combine is very hazardous for the residents, especially for the health of the children.

”During the investigation we have samples four sorts of slug and, as a result, we found out that in all samples the maximum amount of the copper exceeded the maximum permissible concentration by 2.4-2.5 times, that of arsenic – 28.6-50.4 times, while the amount of chrome exceeded the maximum permissible concentration by 15.5-94.7 times,’ the AUA “Healthcare Service Research and Development Center” says.

Alaverdi Mayor Karen Paremouzyan informed that the Municipality used over 110 tons of slug and 10 tons of salt to make the roads in the town passable. In its reply Karen Paremouzyan said, “I think it’s not Alaverdi municipality that shall provide information about the content of the slug and its risks for human health. Even soil and salt contain materials hazardous for human health, nevertheless, Alaverdi community budget funds couldn’t afford any other reagents for snow cleaning and melting works.”
