The process of direct democracy is at full swing: on 6 May 2019, the Aldermen’s Council of Areni optimized community adopted the resolution “On recognizing Areni Community an an environmental and economic area and banning metallic mining in the community.” The resolution has been adopted with 9 votes for, 0 – against and – abstain. The resolution says, “Guiding by the requirements of Article 18(1(42)) of RA Law “On Local Self Government” and taking into consideration the signature collection organized by Areni community residents – 2868 signatures, the Aldermen’s Council of Areni Community rules:
1. To recognize Areni Community as an environmental and economic area,
2. From now on to ban geoprospecting and mining operations related to metallic mining industry in the administrative area of Areni community.”
Reminder: So far three other communities in Armenia have come up with the initiative not to allow metallic mining in their natural environments – Noveyberyan in the spring of 2018, Jermuk in the fall of 2018 and Gladzor in April 2019. The Aldermen’s Councils have approved the expression of people’s will with their relevant resolutions.
