On January 21, the residents of Kapan community blocked Kapan-Yerevan interstate road demanding that Kapan be recognized as a disaster zone due to the exploitation of Artsvanik tailing dump by Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine. Syunik Regional Police Chief, Colonel Gevorg Azizyan arrived at the scene and intervened to clean the road. According to syuniacyerkir.am, an agreement was reached between the chief of police and the demonstrator to meet next week and discuss the raised issue.
The Artsvanik tailing dump is Armenia's largest tailing dump. It has left considerable land in the larger Kapan community under its waste. The first land for the tailing dump from Artsvanik village was 240 hectares in 1973, then in 2006 - 102 hectares. On May 21, 2015, by decision 791 N, 274,8378 hectares ws allotted to the tailing dump. On May 21, 2015, RA Government Decree 791-N recognized the public domain over the expansion of the Artsvanik tailing dump in the administrative boundaries of Artsvanik, Sevaqar, Atchani, Ghapni and Syunik rural communities in the total amount of 491,8093 hectares of agricultural land areas.
Kapan community is also under the impact of Geghanush tailing dump operated by Chaarat Kapan Company.
