Azerbaijani environmental non-governmental organizations have appealed to Nikol Pashinyan with an open letter, demanding to stop the mining activities carried out by Armenia, which "undermines the environmental stability in the South Caucasus".
Vesti.am asked questions to environmentalist Inga Zarafyan, President of "EcoLur" NGO.
- Mrs. Zarafyan, how do you evaluate the content of the letter of the Azerbaijani environmentalists? It has to do with reality.
- This is another Azerbaijani environmental manipulation, I consider the statements of their ecologists from the point of view of politics, which has nothing to do with environmental protection. We have never seen Azerbaijani environmentalists speaking about such serious ecological problems of their country. Azerbaijan has significant and serious problems related to both oil and gas production.
We have never seen the organizations that appealed to Nikol Pashinyan at any environmental international meetings. I have the impression that some unknown people act on behalf of ecologists and fulfill the order of the government of Azerbaijan. There is an initiative for the transparency of the extractive industries, which is a serious international process and Armenia is also a member of it, and Azerbaijan stopped its membership so that there would be no monitoring in their country. In addition, the really concerned employees have stopped representing Azerbaijan and are doing this work independently.”
