Meghri Community gave its initial agreement that “Nariprof” LLC will continue the geological prospecting of copper and gold-bearing ore vein in Nrnadzor (Newvad) in Meghri area. The public hearings were held on 16 May at Meghri Community Municipality. Meghri Community Head Mkhitar Zaqaryan said, “If there is no damage caused to our nature, we don’t find it expedient to refuse from small financial payments.”

According to the representative of “Nariprof” LLC Samvel Meloyan, only soil works will be carried out, no heavy machinery will be operated and no damage will be caused to the nature.

The administrative head of Nrnadzor residential area mentioned that they are not against geological prospecting but they are against any mining operations. Kapan activist Davit Hakobyan raised the question of entering the territory of Areviq National Park and addressed a question to the representative of “Nariprof” LLC who have order for the geological prospecting. In reply, Samvel Meloyan said, “I am the authorized person of the company administration and I am not aware who the customer is.”

Nrnadzor (Newvad) copper and gold-bearing ore vein is located north-east from Nrnadzor Village of Meghri optimized community, at a distance of 4.5 km.

The area partially overlaps with the area of Areviq National Park, where geological prospecting is banned to be carried out in line with the governmental resolution №1209 dated on 15.10.2009. Despite this fact, in 2016 RA Nature Protection Ministry issued a positive statement to “Nariprof” LLC to determine the reserves of gold and accompanying metals.
