The loan taken for the modernization shall be paid back starting from 2020 during 10 years, as Deputy Director on ANPP Lifetime Extension Gera Sevikyan said at the event organized by Union of Nuclear Energy Veterans of Armenia.
The term of the second power unit of the ANPP expired in 2016, and the Government reached a decision to extend the lifetime of the second power unit of the ANPP for 10 years and Russia granted a loan of USD $ 270 million and a grant of USD $ 30 million for the purpose of the power unit modernization.
“The loan taken for the modernization shall be paid back starting from 2020 during 10 years. We don’t have any other income, besides the electricity we produce, and it’s considered to be the cheapest and due to it we receive electricity at relatively cheaper tariffs. If the ANPP stops, the electricity price will increase twice,” Gera Sevikyan said.

It should be mentioned that the Electric Networks of Armenia buy the electricity produced by the ANPP at 5.7 AMD.
According to Sevikyan, the power unit can serve for at least 30 years after the reconstruction. As a result of the rehabilitation, it is expected to receive 20% more electricity by using the same amount of fuel. Besides, the ANPP safety level will be increased – from 8 to 9 points.
“Out of these USD $ 300 million, around 180 million will be spent to increase safety level. Our aim is to ensure the operation of the equipment at higher level. One part of the main equipment is planned to be changed, the other part is planned to be modernized. We plant to accomplish our works in 2019,” Gera Sevikyan mentioned.
