The bottoms of the tailing dumps developed in Syunik Region are not isolated, and the environment is contaminated with tails, as “South Water Basin Management Action Plan for 2016-2021” says.

There are 6 operating tailing dumps in the region at this moment – Artsvanik, Geghanush, Geghi, Darazam, “Hovit 1” and “Hovit 2”.

“Land areas and orchards are located immediately below the tailing dumps and their irrigation will be carried out with the water from the tailing dump, which contains high concentration of heavy metals. Immigration from the adjacent communities has been observed because of tailing dump harmfulness and as a result of losing land areas or insufficient harvest. Besides, the animals graze around the tailing dumps and drink the water of the tailing dump polluted with heavy metals, which poses risks to human health,” the document says.

The reclaimed tailing dumps of the region also poison the environment. It has been estimated that the double reclaiming of Voghji (3 ha) and Pkhrout (18 ha) tailing dumps will require 8.4 and 50.4 million AMD, respectively. 11.75 million AMD will be required to reclaim 2.5 ha area near Dastakert tailing dump.
