Out of 26 Charcoal Workshops Only One Operating - Danger Neutralized: Tavush Regional Head

EcoLur

In Tavush Region, only one of 26 charcoal workshops currently operates regularly, as Tavush Regional Head Hayk Chobanyan informed in response to EcoLur's inquiry. EcoLur has sent an enquiry to Tavush Regional Head to ask for information on the results of the committee studying the effects of charcoal workshops, the set of recommendations and an action plan based on the governor's assignment.

Tavush Regional Head Hayk Chobanyan's response letter says:

“Based on Decision No. 70-A of Tavush Regional Head dated on 29.05.2019, a committee was set up to study the operation and environmental impact assessment of the charchoal workshops operating in Azatamut community, which surveyed examined 12 of 26 businesses entities and discussed with them the technologies used in the workshops and the damage they caused.

The Committee recommended the producers to modernize the production process, use convection ovens, which would increase the production efficiency coefficient and, as a result of secondary smoke burning, emissions would decrease. On 03.09.2019 we sent a letter to the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Armenia 01/05016-2019 on conducting relevant studies.

As a result, it was found out that there are problems with the definition of standards, as well as with the provision of technical control. At the same time, as a result of using administrative control tools, the workshops are mostly closed (1 workshop is operating instead of previous 26).
