The re-equipment and reconstruction project of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant will be continued. The first five months in 2018 will be a very active stage of ANPP reconstruction, as RA Deputy Minister for Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources Hayk Harutyunyan said at the meeting with the journalists on 13 February.
He also mentioned that the most part of the investments made at the ANPP will be directed to the increase in safety level.
“Around US $170 million out of the invested US $ 300 million will be directed to the increase in safety standards. As a result of reconstruction project, we will have an increase by at least 10% of the ANPP due to its efficiency growth,” Hayk Harutyunyan said.
Referring to the comments on ANPP closedown Hayk Harutyunyan said they had never stated that the ANPP is going to operate forever. He informed that the International Atomic Energy is carrying out regular studies and issues opinions.
“We are planning to prolong the ANPP re-equipment and reconstruction project. Similar power units in the EU have been prolonged not for 10 years but 30 years. We don’t see any problems here. Surely we should realize when we are going to decommission it, as well as our further steps in this regard. Nobody says the ANPP will operate forever, but our investments are mainly directed at the increase in safety standards and we have always taken measures in that direction,” he said.
