The Nature Protection Ministry is examining the violations in the SHPP sector. Under Minister Erik Grigoryan, there are already detected SHPPs, which have carried out more water intake than it is set out in their water use permits.
'We have at least 20 SHPPs, which have carried out water intake by 30-50% more. The legislation sets out a time period granted to abolish the violations, afterward there is a legal possibility to suspend these permits,' Erik Grigoryan said.
Referring to the problem of Yeghegis River SHPPs, Erik Grigoryan mentioned, 'There are two SHPPs, which already have water usage permit, but still haven't undergone environmental impact assessment. If they apply to use the river resources, they should be issued a negative opinion, as the river is overloaded with derivation pipelines and it exceeds the statutory limit. Nevertheless, there are legal issues to be discussed with the previously issued permits and opinions, if they have been issued within the scope of the legislation.'
