On 17 March a number of NGOs and civic initiatives signed the petition addressed to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on Lake Sevan problem.

The public was concerned with the governmental resolution, which stipulates of increasing water outlet limit from 170 million cubic meters to 240 million cubic meters for duration of five years and fish breeding project in Lake Sevan, which envisages to breed 50,000 tons of trout in cage nets in lake Sevan by 2023 feeding the fish with forage containing nitrogen and phosphorus.

'We believe in the president of this republic and we believe he won't allow the national wealth of our generations to destroy and national reserves to be polluted,' said Gagik Tadevosyan, the co-author of RA Law 'On Lake Sevan' at the press conference held at EcoLur Press Club.

Under Gagik Tadevosyan, these projects violated several articles of RA Law 'On Lake Sevan' at once. ‘Articles 10, 11, 13, 15, 16, 28 of RA Law 'On Lake Sevan' are violated, Article 10 thereof bans any activities with adversary effect on the ecosystem of Lake Sevan in central immediate and non-immediate impact zones,' Gagik Tadevosyan said. 'If we can't ensure water level increase, we can't ensure current water level. As soon as we reduce water increase, we will jeopardize Lake Sevan, as freshwater.' Gagik Tadevosyan mentioned that naturally the fish is also an important and integral part of the environmental system, but fish breeding shall have natural origin.

'I'm appealing to our nation to voice and to struggle against these two disasters for them not to pass readings at the national assembly,' Gagik Tadevosyan said.

The speaker at the press conference, Seyran Minasyan, specialist in water ecosystems, spoke about the problem of Lake Sevan management and added that Lake Sevan is in extreme misbalance and the lake won't survive such experiments. ‘We had irreversible reduction of phosphorus concentration and drastic increase in nitrogen concentration. We used to have a unique lake, but we are losing this uniqueness caused by water outlets during decades. Besides, no cleaning station on the shore of Lake Sevan operates and the inflow of household waters is recorded. Another important factor polluting the lake and increasing the concentration of nutrition materials is the household garbage,' said Seyran Minasyan outlining the need for the increase in Lake Sevan level.
