Representatives of Public and Governmental Sectors Discussed Yerevan’s Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan

As a member of the European Union’s “Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy” initiative, Yerevan has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030. To achieve this goal, the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) has been developed for Yerevan, which was discussed by representatives of the public and governmental sectors during the roundtable entitled “Yerevan’s Needs as Climate Vulnerable Area” held at “EcoLur” Press Club.

Gorik Avetisyan and Astghine Pasoyan presented SECAP’s sectoral measures. Thus, in the transport sector, an annual reduction of 187,350 tons of greenhouse gas emissions and energy savings of 300,116,208 kWh is planned by 2030, with an estimated capital investment of 240,087,000 Euros. In this sector, 35% of public transportation is planned to be converted to electric or hydrogen-based vehicles, road infrastructure is to be improved, and the use of electric vehicles is to be promoted.

Through energy efficiency and renewable energy measures in public buildings, an annual reduction of 6,259 tons of greenhouse gas emissions and energy savings of 28,242,000 kWh is expected, with an estimated capital investment of 50,789,502 euros. In this sector, Yerevan’s second energy efficiency program is being implemented, including energy-efficient renovations and horizontal measures aimed at increasing energy efficiency.

In the area of municipal solid waste, the implementation of the Strategic Program for Community Solid Waste Management is planned.

In the urban lighting sector, the estimated capital investment amounts to 19,350,000 Euros.

In the greening sector of the capital, the estimated capital investment amounts to 1,282,876 euros. To achieve this goal, it is planned to expand the green area of Yerablur Pantheon by 5–10 hectares, Hrazdan Gorge by 7–10 hectares, the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex by 5–7 hectares, establish approximately 230 hectares of “Dalma Gardens” as a community park, and improve the energy efficiency of community greenhouses. It is also planned to implement a system for continuous monitoring of the effectiveness of green area restoration and expansion efforts.

“Yerevan’s Needs as Climate Vulnerable Area” roundtable was organized by “EcoLur” Informational NGO within the framework of "Civil Society Becomes an Active Participant in Yerevan's Green Transition" project project, implemented with the support of People Powered - Global Hub for Participatory Democracy” in cooperation with Yerevan Municipality.
