S.O.S.: Meghri Agriculture Will Completely Disappear Because of Mining

If the process of constructing mining enterprises is not stopped, the agriculture in Meghri area will completely disappear, as the specialists beat an alarm signal to Syunik Deputy Regional Governor Vache Grigoryan at the meeting in Kapan Aarhus Center. As Kapan Aarhus Center Coordinator Ashot Avagyan writes on www.aarhus.am website, the high demand of fruit growing in the communities of Meghri river basin will eventually disappear, as the river basin will be filled with huge amount of arsenium besides heavy metals. 'Meghri won't be able to export its agricultural products to any country. After 20-30 years when mining reserves are exhausted, the water rich in heavy metals and arsenium flowing out of mines will eventually contaminate this clear river, as it happened with Kavart River in Kapan, where the water is dead and can't be used for anything,' Ashot Avagyan writes.
