"There are no bloomed areas in Small Sevan today and very few areas have bloomed in Greater Sevan," RA Acting Environment Minister Vahe Jilavyan said at the press conference on July 29 on "Causes of activation of blue-green algae in Lake Sevan, ways to reduce eutrophication and a comprehensive solution to the problem."
He noted that the RA Government has given very strict instructions to take all measures to minimize and prevent the blooming of Lake Sevan. The Government of the Republic of Armenia has instructed to submit programs on the cleaning of waterlogged coastal areas as well as the areas subject to flooding, on the exclusion of wastewater flow to Lake Sevan and rivers.
Evelina Ghukasyan, Director of Institute of Hydroecology and Ichthyology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, said that this year the cold weather contributed to the weakening of the blooming phenomena in Lake Sevan.
“This year the blooming process is rather weak, but it does not mean that the factors that gave birth to those blooming phenomena have been overcome. After the algae blooms, nothing changes. They settle to the bottom of the lake, increase the load of organic matter, during the decomposition events take away the oxygen of the bottom layers, due to which they create poor living conditions. This contamination contributes to the spread of diseases among crawfish.”
Gayane Shahnazaryan, Deputy Director of Hydro-Meteorological Monitoring Center of RA Environment Ministry, also mentioned the poor ecological condition of Lake Sevan, “We have a poor ecological condition in Lake Sevan, the oxygen in the bottom layer is low, the amount of nutrients is enough to observe the blooming process continuously. Transparency is up to 4 meters. All these characteristics indicate that we have a sufficient amount of biomaterials in the lake," she said.
It should be noted that in order to restore the balance of Lake Sevan ecosystem, it is necessary to raise the level of the lake to 1903.5 m by 2030. As of July 29, the level of the lake is 1900.76 m, which is 2 cm lower than the same date last year.
