RA Water Committee is proposing to recognize Yeghegis water basin as the drainage basin of Lake Sevan. In this regard, the Committee has tabled a legislative initiative.
‘Since the operation of Arpa-Sevan tunnel, water has been transferred into Lake Sevan both from Kechout reservoir (up to 170 million cum) and Yeghegis River (up to 80 million cum), which, as a matter of fact, means that the Yeghegis water basin upwards the Yeghegis hydrosanction is also a part of Lake Sevan drainage basin. This draft envisages complementing this legal loophole,’ the rationale of the bill says.
According to the official information, annually an average of 200 million cum water has been transferred to Lake Sevan since the operation of Arpa-Sevan tunnel in 2011. Since 2017, works aimed at increasing the tunnel capacity have been launched, which are planned to be accomplished this year. The performance of these works will enable making the capacity of the tunnel from 13 m3/s to 19.5-20 m3/s, while spring melting will enable transferring more water to Lake Sevan annually ensuring up to 250 million m3.
