On 1 July Gegharkounik-Based 'Azhdahak' Environmental Center, Gehgarkounik Region, held a protest demonstration in the protection of Lake Sevan.
In the Center's press release addressed to EcoLur it says, ''Azhdahak' Environmental Center' operating in the area next to Lake Sevan raised their voices of protesting against additional water intake from Lake Sevan. They spoke about hazards threatening Lake Sevan in case of additional water intake. They wrote thematic posters and marched and joined S.O.S Sevan environmental initiative with their signatures and protests. Despite agricultural overload, a group of adults also joined this movement saying no to additional water intake...'.
Center Head Nelli Drnoyan told EcoLur that people were unaware of the problem. 'People were unaware when we presented how much water they want to take from the lake and they all opposed to it. The entire village opposes to the additional water intake from Lake Sevan,' Nelli Drnoyan said.
Reminder: the agenda of the National Assembly for 4 July includes the bill on making amendments to RA Law 'On Approving Annual and Complex Programs for Recovery, Conservation, Reproduction and Use of Lake Sevan Ecosystem', which lays down to have additional water intake of 100 million m3 besides the maximum statutory water intake of 170 million cum.
