In 2020, the amount of water intake from Lake Sevan was set at 170 million cubic meters. The decision was made at the May 4 sitting of the RA Government. The flouring of poisonous cyanobacteria, which lasts for several weeks, has now begun in Lake Sevan. Under such conditions, it is not clear what impact the irrigation water from Lake Sevan will have on crops. Recently, RA Deputy Environment Minister Irina Ghaplanyan told at the press conference that no research has been done in Armenia to understand the impact of cyanobacterial toxicity on agricultural products in case of irrigation with Sevan water.

According to Irina Ghaplanyan, there are no relevant laboratory facilities for such research. In general, the area of irrigated lands in Armenia this year was about 31 thousand hectares, and the demand for irrigation water was about 463 million cubic meters. According to estimates, it is possible to provide irrigable land with 413 million cubic meters of water, the water deficit will be about 50 million cubic meters.
