“The hearsay that the cage nets placed in Lake Sevan are the cause of the blooming in Lake Sevan, doesn’t comply with the reality. Nowadays the inflow of the phosphorus into Lake Sevan from these cage nets makes up less than 0.1%, which can’t lead to the blooming of the entire Lake Sevan. Lake blooming has been conditioned with the high-temperature background, decrease in the level and increase in phosphorus,” Head of Scientific Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA said in his interview with EcoLur.
It should be mentioned that “Sevan Trout Recovery and Fish Breeding Development” Foundation is breeding trout in cage nets in Lake Sevan through “Sevan trout” and “Sevan Aqua” CJSCs.
“Cage net fish breeding like any other human activity contains certain risks. The main risk of cage net fish farming is the inflow of the phosphorus into the lake through the fish excretion. Our organization, as well as other organizations, is carrying out monitoring where assimilation is assessed – how much phosphorus can be introduced into the lake by the cage net fish farm in case of the specific amount of fish. We do relevant calculations, assess the impact of the cage net fish farm on Lake Sevan ecosystem and submit the findings to “Sevan Trout Recovery and Fish Breeding Development” Foundation and competent bodies,” Bardukh Gabrielyan said.
Reminder: in 2013-2017 9 billion AMD was donated to this Foundation from the reserve funds of the Armenian Government to implement cage net fish farming project in Lake Sevan.
