"SHANT-SEYRAN" LLC is destroying the bed of the Martuni River flowing into Lake Sevan, removing sand and crushed stone from there. The river bed has been violated. Martuni residents are beating an alarm signal to EcoLur about this.
The Martuni River bed has been regularly demolished by “SHANT-SEYRAN” LLC engaged in the production of asphalt concrete. Sand and crushed stone are removed from the river. The area where the raw material is extracted is called "Yaylateghi" and is under the protection of "Service of Preservation of Historical-Cultural Museums and Historical Environment" SNCO.
During the works, Gor Gasparyan, an employee Service of Preservation of Historical-Cultural Museums and Historical Environment SNCO, banned to carry out the raw material extraction and equipment was removed from the site.
Works are now resumed in another area. As a result of the works, the riverbed was violated and the road leading to "Yaylateghi" and became almost impassable. The last issue was addressed on January 14, 2020, when residents again staged a protest demanding a halt and went to the municipality," the letter addressed to EcoLur by Martuni residents says.
Pursuant to Article 99, Paragraph 8 of RA Water Code, it is forbidden to perform any kind of work in the territory of the water resource aqueduct or water protection zone, except for the cases provided by the legislation.
Residents of Martuni told EcoLur that there was no public discussion on the extraction of sand and gravel from the river in Martuni.
