EcoLur has received an alarm signal fro Syunik Village, Syunik Region that the wastewater of is flowing into the irrigation canal of the village. The text of the alarm signal Zangezour copper and molybdenum combine says:
'the main supplier of agricultural products of Kapan and Qajaran large communities in Syunik Region. In 2013-2014 due to the grants given by the UNDP/GEF and the OSCE, the alternative water canal of Syunik Village was rehabilitated, due to which the village has been receiving clean water for several years. The amount of clean water reaching us makes up 80-120 l/s and if it is managed properly it is sufficient for the irrigation of 80-120 ha land area under the provisions of the legislation. Before the rehabilitation of the alternative canal, the land areas in the village had been irrigation with the water flowing out Artsvanik tailing dump and into Atchanan River after undergoing mechanical cleaning. According to the studies carried out by the Center for Noosphere Ecological Studies of NAS RA in 2007-2008, the plants growing in Syunik Village were considered to be hazardous for use.
Recently, the water intake of the newly constructed canal was partially demolished and the polluted water of Zangezour copper and molybdenum combine was joined to the clean water, most probably, to increase the water amount. There is a version that this was done by the workers of the pumping station of Zangezour copper and molybdenum combine with the help of the 'water man' of Syunik village so as to take clean water via the pumps to irrigate their land areas, while the combine wastewater was added to the canal so as the residents of Syunik Village didn't complain of the lack of water.'
EcoLur has addressed this alarm signal to RA Nature Protection and Soil Body Head Arthur Grigoryan so as the Inspection Body
- carries out inspections and finds out how the wastewater of Zangezour copper and molybdenum combine is found in the irrigation canal of Syunik Village,
- appraises the damage caused to the environment with the irrigation of wastewater and determine the amount of the compensation to be paid to the land users and the state,
- obligates to remove the wastewater from the canal and not to carry out illegal water intake,
- obligates Zangezour copper and molybdenum combine to install chemical cleaning stations for the cleaning of industrial wastewater.
It should be mentioned that currently the inspections are being carried out at ' Zangezour Copper and Molybdenum Combine' CJSC.
