Fish Farming - A Disaster for Groundwater and Population in Ararat Valley

Fish Farming - A Disaster for Groundwater and Population in Ararat Valley

Pan-Armenian Environmental Front

The Pan-Armenian Environmental Front is beating an alarm signal the artesian groundwater basin are facing most serious challenges.

In 2013 the total volume of the used artesian basin in Ararat Valley made up around 1.8 billion cum per year, out of which 64% was used by the fish farms, which accounts for 1.12 billion cum per year, and for this reason the permissible water intake was exceeded by approximately 1.6 times.

This volume exceeded the water let out of Lake Sevan for the same year by 6.5 times and exceeded annual drinking water amount used in Yerevan by around 18 times.

From 2007 to 2013 this figure increased almost three times because of new large fish farms.

Because of all this, annually around 270 million cum water flew and continues flowing into the Aras river and then to Nkahijevan irrigating others’ fields and orchards.

All fish farms are supposed to pay annually 53 million AMD or 137,000 USD for using 1.12 billion cum water as environmental fee (only 5 lumas for one cum), if they have paid it.
