The public hearings on of the geological prospecting of Vazashen gold-polymetallic minefield in Vazashen Community, Tavush Region, on 27 February were not held. Nevertheless, as EcoLur’s reporter informs from the scene, Community Head Lorik Badiryan refuses to record this fact and doesn’t answer the questions of the journalists.

Our reporter informs that since morning Vazashen residents have been collected near the building of the Village Municipality.  Environmentalists and activists having arrived from Yerevan have joined them. A part of the residents is against holding public hearings, while the other part wants to get acquainted with the project. Nevertheless, there are no representatives either from “AU Group” having submitted the project or from the Nature Protection Ministry.

There have been some tense situations: there are instigators among people giving gathered – one of them is drunk near the Village Municipality, another person dropped a fly-flap in the area. They said they want the hearings to be held and to determine the future of the mine by themselves and not to have it determined by the citizens having arrived from Yerevan. There are policemen on the spot.

Today Tavush Regional Head Hayk Chobanyan had a meeting with the representatives of “AU Group” and Nature Protection Ministry at Tavush Regional Municipality. He mentioned that holding public hearings in this stage is wrong as stakeholders are not fully informed.

To be continued.
