Amulsar Protectors Threatened: Statement

Amulsar Protectors Threatened: Statement

“Human Rights House Yerevan”, Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Office, Human Rights Defender Zaruhi Hovhannisyan disseminated a statement on threats posed to Amulsar protectors. The statement says:

Recently the letters addressed by “Legal Consultation Company of “Lydian Armenia” CJSC, “Fidelity Consulting Lawyers” CJSC” to the citizens complaining against Amulsar mining, as well as press publications contain obvious threats, which, as we assess, are an obstacle to the free expression of the residents of the local communities, an attempt to pressure the freedom of expression and local demonstrations and hinders the development of democracy in Armenia.

On behalf the head of the aforementioned organization A. Melqumyan, on 25 June a number of citizens received “notifications” where the peaceful demonstrations of the population for the protection of their own rights and public interests and blocking of roads were qualified as “a crime.”  Under the Armenian Constitution and laws, only competent law enforcements bodies of RA are illegible to qualify an action as a crime and to administer justice. Thus, by making such qualifications the legal consultation company abused its powers attributing itself the function of the law-enforcement bodies of Armenia and the competence to make a judgment.

We are demanding from law-enforcement bodies to have an adequate response thus ensuring complete protection of human rights in the territory of Armenia. The statement is open for joining. “EcoLur” Informational NGO is joining this statement of the representatives of the civil society.
