Geghanush Villagers, Syunik Region, again started their protests aginst Geghanush tailing dump of Kapan-based 'Deno Gold Mining Company' CJSC. Still in 2004, when this very company submitted a project on constructing a tailing dump on the road running to the village, Geghanush villagers protested stating their village is put at stake in this way.
One of this company goals is currently to make Shahumyan mine an opencast mine, though no clear answer has been given so far, as under the company employees, they are still conducting geological prospecting and it's too early to speak about opencast mines. According to Geghanush villagers, they will be the most affected persons in case of a new mine taking into consideration the new volume of tails, as well as limited capacity of Geghanush tailing dump.
'The company must assess risks, and then submit these assessments to Nature Protection Ministry, afterwards they must draw up an action plan, otherwise a disaster will occur. If risk is not assessed, disaster is inevitable,' said 'EcoLur' NGO president.
