A breakdown occurred at the tailing pipe of Geghanush tailing dump owned by Deno Gold Mining Company at approximately 07:30 on 1 December. The tails poured out into the Geghanush River, which is a tributary to the Voghji transboundary river. According to the administration of Deno Gold Mining Company, the cause of the breakdown is sabotage. The press release of the company particularly says, “The company employee was the first to detect the breakdown and informed the heads and competent state bodies about it. Our preliminary investigation showed that the probable cause of the breakdown is sabotage. The company condemns the actions, which cause damage to environment, communities and local people and companies. These actions can’t avert us from the course we took – to become the better company. The company takes all necessary measures to implement the requirements of the law and the best practices, as well as takes all the measures to prevent sabotage in future.” The company also points out that extraordinary works on the cleaning of the territory had been launched.
It should be mentioned that it’s the third breakdown of the tailing pipe of Geghanush tailing dump for 2012.
