By 2020 a new sanitary landfill site will have been constructed in Syunik Region, which will serve the population of the whole region. The Armenian Government approved the concept paper on solid household waste management in Syunik Region at the meeting held at the end of 2017.
The new landfill site is initially proposed to be constructed in the Shapni residential area in Kapan Community in the area of 20 ha for operation term of 20 years. The concept paper says it shall comply with the EU standards. After the operation of the new landfill site, all other landfill sites are subject to closure. Under the data of 'Clean Armenia' project for 2017, Syunik Region has 137 landfill sites inventoried, out of which 83 have already been closed down.
Under the concept paper, no garbage recycling is envisaged as it's the case for Lori Region, while initial garbage recycling options are available only in urban residential areas.
'Though garbage recycling and use have important environmental significance and are carried out almost in all progressive societies, in case of Syunik Region, its socio-economic and economic forecasts don't lead to the introduction of such systems in the near future, if there are no profitable investment projects,' the concept paper says.
