An arrangement has been reached with the EU and a project proposal has been submitted to introduce systems for the conservation and liquidation of inventoried wells in Ararat Valley (690 million AMD) and to use discharge water of fish farms (around 2 billion grant funds), as Environment Minister Erik Grigoryan said at the press conference dedicated to the World Environment Day.

“What about Ararat artesian basin, I would like to inform that 700 liter per second water has been saved which makes up annually 20-30 million water amount,” the minister noted.
Currently around 60 ha in Sayat Nova Community and 40 ha in Hayanist is irrigated with discharge water of fish farms in Armavir Region.

As a matter of fact, 168 fish farms actually work in the Ararat Valley, out of which 102 in Ararat and 66 in Armavir Region. In the course of recent 10-15 years, the maximum permissible limit has been essentially exceeded because of large fish farms operating in Ejmiatsin and Masis Regions, the natural state of groundwater has been endangered, while the residents are facing serious socio-economic problems.

Reminder: the verdict of Public Environmental Court PEC 001/19 on Case of violating balance of groundwater resources in Ararat artesian basin said, “To develop and introduce a system or a water circulation system designed to use the discharge water of the fish farms for irrigation purposes.”
