More than 200 fish farms have been granted water use permits without expertise for some time and are currently operating illegally. About this RA Prosecutor General Artur Davtyan announced at the Cabinet meeting held on August 29 noting that "the well-known Minister of Nature Protection" had granted illegal permits.

In this regard, RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted: “It is a very difficult situation because the 200 entities, if we look at our statistics, in terms of exports, production volumes, are a significant part of our economy. We have to find very delicate solutions here, but we have to find solutions.”

It should be noted that the fish farms operating in the Ararat Valley have violated the Ararat artesian basin balance by using 40% more than groundwater recovery capacity. As a result, the groundwater horizons dropped to 10-15 m. Many self-draining wells have dried up, and desertification processes have intensified.

Reminder: EcoLur has organized a Public Environmental Court on "Breaking the Balance of the Artesian Basin Groundwater Reservoir” and based on its verdict the Prosecutor General's Office stated criminal case no 27124313 was initiated based on the features of Article 291(2) of RA Criminal Code on 27.12.2013.

On 27.12.2018 the RA Prosecutor General took the above mentioned criminal case from the proceedings of RA Investigative Committee and submitted it to Special Investigative Service of the Republic of Armenia, due to the factual circumstances, in view of the necessity to guarantee a comprehensive, full and objective investigation.
