“The water amount set by the government doesn’t create minimum conditions for getting harvest...If other land areas need to be watered 13-15 times per year, we have to water 30-40 times to get harvest, our land areas are over-normative…” Aknalitch residents were complaining in their conservation with EcoLur.
The Armenian Government has set 9000-11000 cubic meters of water for irrigating one ha of area costing around 130,000 AMD. The villager has to pay 11 AMD for one cubic meter. In reply to the question whether the villagers can afford the fee and whether they are able to pay for the needed water amount, STWI PIU Director Adibek Ghazaryan said, “They can afford it, as we understand that tertiary canals are quite destructed. Armenia has 16,000 tertiary canals of 17,000 km and huge funds are needed for their rehabilitation, but I don’t think that you can find an area, which is arid.” Adibek Ghazaryan advised the villagers to save water.
