At the end of the year, Lake Sevan closed 2019 with a positive balance at a level of 1900.43 m, being 4 centimeters higher than last year. Despite the efforts of the Government of the Republic of Armenia to raise the level of the lake, even with this indicator the level of the lake is lower than in 2016. In 2016 the lake had a level of 1900.46 m.
In 2019, the positive balance of the lake contributed to less than 170 million cubic meters as required by law, up to 143.857 million cubic meters of water and the transfer of about 159 million cubic meters of water to Lake Sevan by Arpa-Sevan tunnel. According to Harutyun Gulyan, Vice-Chairman of Water Committee, by 2020 it is planned to transfer 160-180 million cubic meters of water to Lake Sevan via Arpa-Sevan tunnel. In 2020, for the first time on January 17, Arpa-Sevan tunnel was launched. It is envisaged to increase the capacity of the tunnel from the current 19 m/s to 20-21 m/s.
