“We want to receive an ecopassport and have applied to Nature Protection Ministry and undertaken a commitment to install a water meter and an online system in our HPP within three months,” said the developer of Martuni SHPP, the director of “MKSHG ENERGIA” LLC during the meeting held at Martuni town hall.
Martuni residents voiced their concerns that this SHPP, as well as all other SHPPs constructed in Lake Sevan basin are eliminating the local nature, fish world and depriving the rivers of their water.
“In line with the law on Lake Sevan, no SHPP can be constructed on the river supplying water to Lake Sevan, either the Martuni River, or the Vardenik River, or the Argitchi River. I am proposing to dismantle all the SHPPs constructed in Sevan basin,” said Anahit Gevorgyan, President of “Martuni Women Community Council” NGO.
In his turn, Martuni SHPP Director assured the operation of the SHPP is stopped in the fish spawning season. Martuni Mayor Armen Avetisyan, though he sees the damage caused, he doesn’t support dismantling the SHPP. He said the “golden” mean should be found.
Armen Avetisyan said that the administration of Martuni SHPP has been given ten-day time to propose solutions to the highlighted problems, meanwhile they will calculate the environmental and social damage caused by SHPP operation and will ask for compensation.
The Mayor added that they demanded the company to present proof that public hearings had been held for the construction of the SHPP with the participation of the local residents.
