THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR BIODIVERSITY IN ARMENIA; WE ARE PART OF NATURE AS WELL

EcoLur

On 22 May the whole world celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity. Traditionally Armenia celebrates this holiday as well. If to take into consideration that the UN declared 2010 year as “International Year for Biodiversity”, it’s clear why many events will take place in Yerevan and many other regions of the country on Saturday, May 22, where representatives of all social layers will take part, particularly children.

Under different data from 2,000,000 to 100,000,000 species can be estimated in the world. Under the estimates of WWF (World Wildlife Fund), by the lowest estimates every year from 200 to 2,000 species become extinct, while by the highest estimates every year from 10,000 to 100,000 species become extinct.

These data in Armenia have their own features. The most important representatives of wildlife in Armenia such as Anatolian leopard, Armenian moufflon sheep and bezoar goat are on the verge of extinction. Only 155 species of vertebrates and 155 species of invertebrates, 463 species of higher plants and 40 species of fungi are included in the new Red Book of Armenia.

The event to in Yerevan Zoo is dedicated to leopard preservation which is held by WWF Armenia, “Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment” NGO with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway.

The most important part of this event is schoolchildren’s pieces of art dedicated to leopard such as toys, pictures, and compositions etc, nearly 150 pieces.

Almost simultaneously a joint press-conference will be opened at “Novosti” Club with the participation of Nature Protection Ministry representatives and German Technical Cooperation  (GTZ).

After the press conference the journalists will head for Ashtarak Gorge where the pupils of Yerevan four schools will demonstrate the results of their own research on biodiversity situation in the Kasagh River ecosystem. This event is held in the frames of biodiversity sustainable management program.

EcoLur reminds: human being is a part of nature. But unlike animals, human being bears responsibility for nature. If we don’t get conscious of it, we will receive a response. Nature will deprive us of global ecosystem as an alien part. Let’s protect our nature and not let ANYBODY sell it.
