Canadian Deno Gold Mining Company intends to exploit Kapan Shahoumian polymetallic mine in open way. Despite the prospective of new jobs, many residents of Kapan oppose this. According to some reports, the company is going to mine gold, copper, silver and zinc.
A spokesman of Deno Gold Mining Norayr Aghayan told Radio Liberty that they are conducting only research.
"Today, the mining pit we exploit in closed method. We see the same mining pit as having potential for development of an open way ", - said Aghayan.
The number of new jobs at open mines may reach several tens. However, most local residents have expressed dissatisfaction to the potential harm from the operation of open mines.
Syunik region residents are concerned with environmental conditions.
"If it's bad for people, why would they exploit the mine, in order to kill people?" – say locals.
