Whitefish Spawning Period in Lake Sevan Over, But Whitefish Cannot Be Caught Yet

On January 20, 2024, the ban on whitefish hunting due to whitefish spawning period ended. However, fishing for whitefish in Lake Sevan is still not allowed. Whitefish fishing will be allowed only after the relevant decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, in particular, after the approval of the quantities and period of industrial hunting.

Reminder: the ban on fishing due to the whitefish spawning period was set from November 25, 2023 to January 20, 2024 inclusive.

On the unified website for the publication of drafts of legal acts, the draft decision "On making an addition to the decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia dated September 28, 2023 N 1656-Н" was put into circulation, under which the maximum annual quantities of industrial fishing for whitefish and crawfish in Lake Sevan and the quality characteristics of fishing were laid down.

According to the project, the maximum annual quantity of industrial fishing of whitefish in 2024 is set at 257 tons, the allowable weight and industrial size for fishing is not less than 400 g and 30 cm. For 2024, the quantity of industrial fishing for crucian carp and crawfish species in Lake Sevan has not been set.

According to the project, the processes implemented are aimed at the sustainable use of fish and crab resources in Lake Sevan, as well as bringing fishing processes into the legal framework. With the adoption of the project, the sphere of use and sustainable management of biological resources in Lake Sevan will be regulated, it is planned to increase revenues to the Armenian state budget in the amount of 16.7 million AMD.

It should be noted that 2,668 tons of whitefish were counted in Lake Sevan in 2019, 2,345 tons in 2020, 5,348 tons in 2021, 4,700 tons in 2022, and 3,950 tons in 2023.
