Armenian ecologist vs government’s wolf hunt permission

The Armenian government’s permission to kill 200 wolves in Armenia’s territory will reduce the wolf population in the country, Silva Adamyan, Coordinator of the Public Ecological Alliance, told journalists on 18 February.

The Armenian government recently issued a permission for wolf hunt. The government plans to pay AMD 100,000 (about 0) for each killed wolf. The reason for the government’s decision is wolves’ more frequent attacks on domestic animals and settlements.

In the current heavy socio-economic conditions, wolf hunt may get out of control when “quite a fortune has been promised” for one head. She proposes a traditional method: farms should keep wolfhounds.

Mamikon Ghasabyan, Artur Beglaryan, Senior Inspector of the Nature Protection Inspection and Artashes Ziroyan of the Ministry of Nature Protection, who took part in the press conference, stated the government's decision would not change anything.

“The wolf is a ‘self-regulating’ animal. It cannot be ‘too many’ or ‘too few’,” Ghasabyan said.

“We permit a hunting season, but we have no hunters. So we are trying to stimulate interest among hunters,” the official said.
