Citizens Holding Protest Demonstration against Construction in Fizgorodok Being Detained

The RA Police detained activists Garik Miskaryan, Seda Grigoryan and Artyom Sadoyan, who were participating in the action against the construction of a multi-storey building in the territory of the Physics Area (Fizgorodok).

On September 14, 2021, the residents of Fizgorodok staged a peaceful protest in front of Yerevan Municipality, which was peaceful. The activists blocked the street in front of the municipality in order to hand over the document they had prepared to Mayor Hayk Marutyan and the members of the Council of Elders to meet with them. In particular, they demanded that the illegal construction be stopped immediately, that the status document be issued, and that the illegally installed fence be removed.

Shortly afterwards, however, police pushed and dragged protesters away from the road. Once again, the police are acting illegally, violating the right of citizens to free expression.

The police also detained Hayk Harutyunyan, a resident of Fizgorodok, who has been on a hunger strike for 20 days, who tried to obstruct the construction of a ramp for heavy equipment.

We learn from the Facebook page of the RA Human Rights Defender that hours after the arrest, the ombudsman's rapid response teams left for the RA Police Departments to protect the rights of the detainees arrested bear Yerevan Municipality.

While verbal promises and agreements are being made, Ratko LLC is actively damaging and destroying perennial trees growing in the area for the construction of a multi-storey building in Fizgorodok. It has left the relevant bodies indifferent. In fact, two residents of the district have been on hunger strike for 20 days, one of whom has gone on a water strike today.

The municipality does not take concrete steps to ban or suspend construction in the area. As a result of the residents' protests, a criminal case was initiated under Article 308, Part 2 of RA Criminal Code. After the initiation of the criminal case, Yerevan Municipality ordered to stop the construction until the end of the investigation of the case. However, this verbal suspension does not prevent the construction company from demolishing and destroying the area and the trees every day.
