“Nuclear power plant itself is an environmental issue; it has rather negative impact on people’s life and health. It’s planned to construct a powerful nuclear power plant with 2.5 more capacities in Armenia, where more than 80% of the population lives in the diameter of 50 km. This is when European countries close down NPPs. Armenia must develop alternative sources of power generation – solar and wind energy. It’s impossible to construct a NPP of such capacity in Armenia, and its operation will modify the temperature regime of environment, as huge amount of waters are taken from river basins for cooling the NPP, which is later filled back to rivers,’ said Gyumri Aarhus Center Coordinator and “Biosophia” NGO Chairman Gevorg Petrosyan.
