Lake Sevan To Meet 2022 with Negative Balance

Lake Sevan will face 2022 with a negative balance. The level of the lake is already lower than the level of the beginning of 2021. On January 8, 2021, the level of Lake Sevan was 1900.52 meters, the lake had a positive balance, being 9 centimeters higher than the same day in 2020. Meanwhile, the level of the lake is 1900.46 m on December 3, 2021.

The decline in the level of the lake has a very negative impact on the lake ecosystem.

The fall of the lake level is influenced by the additional water intakes, the decrease of the river flows flowing into the lake as a result of global warming, the evaporation, but our observations showed that the lake had a negative balance especially in the years when the additional water intake was carried out. Except for the additional water intake of 2008, negative balances were recorded as a result of the additional water intake in 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2021.

360.0 million cubic meters of water intake was conducted in 2008, 320.0 million cubic meters in 2012, 240.0 million cubic meters in 2014, 270.0 million cubic meters in 2017, 210.0 million cubic meters in 2018, 227. 651 in 2021 million cubic meters.

Reminder: Law "On approving the annual and complex programs of measures for the restoration, preservation, reproduction and use of Lake Sevan ecosystem" stipulates a maximum amount of 170 million cubic meters of water intake from Lake Sevan.
