No Nematode Found in Sevan National Park, but Pine Trees To Be Cut Down

It is no secret that Lake Sevan is of strategic importance for Armenia. Forests have almost the same importance for Lake Sevan.

They prevent water evaporation, erosion, protect the spread of diseases in neighboring communities. Deforestation can be fatal for the lake, and such a danger exists.

A team of scientists has completed the study of the cause of the drying of the pine trees surrounding the lake.

It turned out that the trees were damaged not by roundworms called nematodes, as in the case of Hanqavan, but by bark beetles, long-nosed beetles and fungal diseases. There are other reasons, for example, poor care, as a result of which the trees have grown close together. As a solution, scientists suggest cutting down the trees.

The Ministry agrees on cutting the trees, but suggests first to wait and make sure that they do not recover, to plant new ones in their place, and then to cut down the existing ones.
