Waiting, Waiting for Ambassador, But Couldn’t Wait to See

On 25 January, the German Ambassador to Armenia Hans-Jochen Schmidt visited Zangezour Copper and Molybdenum Combine. Still in December 2011, the Ambassador expressed his concern in regard with the situation in Qajaran Village, where the villagers opposed to government decision N 627. According to this decision, 181.7 ha of land area was seized from the village with a formulation of “eminent public domain” and transferred these land areas to Zangezour Combine. ZCMC main shareholder is German Cronimet Mining Company, and the villagers appealed to the owners of this very company to share responsibility for this decision.

Qajaran villagers learnt about the German Ambassador’s visit very accidentally and hoped they could meet with the Ambassador. In their telephone conversation with EcoLur, they said they had prepared for the meeting with the ambassador. “We wanted to know his opinion on what is going on and to tell him what we think about all this. However, it didn’t happen. Even the village head was not invited to the meeting,” the villagers told us.
