Climate Action - Priority. Outcomes of "National Adaptation Program in Armenia" UNDP-GCF Project Summarized

The outcomes of "Armenia's National Adaptation Plan " (NAP) of the United Nations Development Program-Green Climate Fund (UNDP-GCF) were summarized during the final workshop.

The objectives of the project are in line with the global goal of Article 7 "Adaptation" of the Paris Agreement to increase adaptation and resilience and reduce vulnerability.

During the implementation of the project, more than 3200 participants were involved, 90 events were held, an atlas of climate and related natural hazards was prepared for Shirak and Lori Regions, climate risk vulnerability was assessed at the sectoral and regional levels, 9 guidelines were developed, 5 sectoral, 2 regional and 1 urban program, adaptation monitoring and evaluation system were developed.

UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia Natia Natsvlishvili welcomed the program participants. “Climate action must be at the forefront of every decision being made at the local, national and global levels. This project has contributed to identifying the right path for the country's adaptation through capacity building, knowledge, awareness raising, policy development and creation in various sectors. Ahead is the implementation of these planned strategies and measures."

Gayane Gabrielyan, RA Deputy Environment Minister, National Coordinator of Framework Convention "On Climate Change" noted: "We are working on enshrining environmental safety, rights and obligations in the Constitution. The environmental agenda should develop equally in three directions: environmental, social and economic."

Diana Harutyunyan, UNDP Climate Change Program Coordinator, said: "Within the framework of this project, awareness and knowledge transfer was carried out at different levels, from schoolchildren to ministers. The greatest merit of the program is that the attitude towards climate issues has changed in various circles. Considering the international resonance and importance in terms of climate change, I believe that the developed documents will also have results in the form of investments."

More details about the outcomes of the project will be available in the next publications of EcoLur.
