Gosh. Ancient History and Contemporary Problems

Gosh village is located in the famous tourist community of Dilijan, in the valley of the Gosh River, adjacent to "Dilijan" National Park, which is recorded as an old settlement since the 10th-11th centuries.

Mkhitar Gosh built Goshavanq monastery complex here in the 12th century, which is considered a historical and cultural monument. Many tourists come here every year and various events are held.

"Today only tourism is developing in the village. The whole village is surrounded with a national park, i.e. clean and green nature. We have attractions, trails, there are professional guides,", Administrative Head of Gosh settlement Gevorg Amirkhanyan noted.

Many tourists visit Gosh for rock climbing at the sports camp "Our Mountains" established in the village. The camp was founded in 2019 by mountaineer Edgar Navasardyan, member of the board of the Mountaineering and Mountain Tourism Federation of Armenia. "We acquired the territory for a rock on which we do rock climbing lessons," Edgar Navasardyan said.

Some Gosh residents have turned their houses into guest houses. Locals sell the good things collected from the forest: berries, herbs, and mushrooms.

According to Administrative Head of Gosh, there are around 350 households in Gosh: about 60 are gasified. "The fuel comes from the tank, is counted and distributed among the residents. 8 cubic meters are delivered free of charge, and the rest of the residents pay 7000-8000 AMD per cubic meter," Gevorg Amirkhanyan said.

The lack of sewage system is a huge problem. Drainage system is also not available. "The location of the village is not flat, there are many slopes, houses are damaged by rainwater and mudslides, landslides are becoming more active. If we have a normal drainage system, we will not have that problem," Gevorg Amirkhanyan noted.

Under the subsidy program, the road of the village was paved in 2023, and the construction of a drinking water line is planned in 2024. The construction of sewage and drainage systems is not planned, as there is no money available.
