On 13 January the civil society representatives and Fioletevo residents had a meeting at EcoLur Press Club, where they discussed the problems of the EIA of the Fioletovo Gold Mining Project.

“The whole village opposes to mine. If the mine is opened and developed in opencast manner, as we are informed, the mine will be at the depth of 100 meters, while our area is mountainous: first of all, we will lose our water and we won’t be able to irrigate our orchards and will lose our drinking water. The next global problem is that our people mainly deal here with husbandry and we can survive due to it in these hard times, while the mine is located just near the pastures. I want to apply to the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and to ask him to support us and to pay attention to our problems,” said Vasily Desyatov, a representative of Fioletovo community.

Silva Adamyan, the Coordinator of Public Environmental Alliance, said in the Soviet period Fioletovo used to be famous for its fresh air, ecologically clean food and was a resort area, where governmental top officials went to rest.

Levon Galstyan, a member of Pan-Armenian Environmental Front, said they had a meeting with UWC Dilijan pupils, where they are also concerned with the mine. He mentioned, “The drinking water springs will be polluted, all the water originating from this area will be polluted, which will be transferred to Dilijan Town via Aghstev. It’s clear, but nobody speaks about it, as the most important problem is water pollution worldwide.”
