On April 22, 2025, the world marks the 55th Earth Day, a global symbol of unity for a healthy and sustainable future for our planet. This year’s theme is “Our Power, Our Planet,” which calls for global solidarity around renewable energy and aims to triple clean electricity production by 2030, according to the international organization EARTHDAY.ORG.
EARTHDAY.ORG, one of the founding organizations of the Earth Day movement, continues to inspire and unite millions of activists, organizations, and governments around the world in the fight to protect our shared home—planet Earth.
Earth Day originated in the United States in 1970 and later evolved into a global movement. By 1990, it became an international environmental campaign, and in 2009, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated International Mother Earth Day.
Every year, in over 180 countries, millions of people participate in a wide variety of environmental events—conferences, exhibitions, tree planting, clean-up campaigns, and more.
Why It Matters
According to www.calend.ru, the planet loses about 10 million hectares of forest each year, and nearly one million species of flora and fauna are at risk of extinction. Plastic pollution contributes to ocean acidification, while climate change, deforestation, ecosystem disruption, intensive agriculture, and poaching accelerate environmental degradation.
Ecosystems are the foundation of life on Earth. Restoring them is critical—not only to reduce poverty and mitigate climate change, but also to prevent large-scale ecological disasters.
