Recommendations Based on "Problems of Air Pollution in Yerevan" Discussions

EcoLur Informational NGO, with the support of the People Powered Global Hub for Participatory Democracy and in cooperation with Yerevan Municipality, implemented "Civil Society Becomes an Active Participant in Yerevan’s Green Transition’" project. Within its framework, a roundtable titled "Problems of Air Pollution in Yerevan" was organized.

The round table was attended by Acting Head of Environmental Protection Department of Yerevan Municipality Sirarpi Haykazyan and Deputy Head Gorik Avetisyan, the representative of “CEE Bankwatch Network” International Organization Arthur Grigoryan, Gohar Hakobyan, Head of  Air Quality Monitoring Service at RA Environment Ministry “Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center”, Hermine Poghosyan - Expert of the Standing Committee on Territorial Administration, Local Self-Government, Agriculture and Environmental Protection of RA National Assembly, Arayik Papoyan - Physician-hygienist of Department of Environmental Hygiene of National Center for Disease Control and Prevention of Health Ministry, Aren Manukyan - Program Manager of Transparency International Anti-Corruption Center and Program Assistant Mary Minasyan, Aarhus National Coordinator of the Convention Marie Chakryan, Coordinator of Aarhus Center in Yerevan Silva Ayvazyan, President of “Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment” NGO Elena Manvelyan, journalist of “Nouvelles d'Arménie” news agency Olivier Merlet, Public Radio journalist Nune Avetisyan, and EcoLur team.

As a result of the discussion, the participants made the following recommendations:

  • It is necessary to improve the transport situation in Yerevan.
  • To prohibit burning of garbage and landfills.
  • To establish green zones and monitor industrial facilities.
  • To set strict supervision to eliminate violations of the requirements of the "Atmospheric Air Protection" law.
  • To obtain reliable data on air pollution.
  • To conduct public health monitoring.
