Armenia’s Biodiversity and Ecotourism Potential Presented at the Altai International Conference

As part of the International Conference on Nature and Environmental Protection held in the Altai Republic, Voskehat Grigoryan, Head of the Department of Bioresources Policy and Biodiversity Policy at the Ministry of Environment, delivered a speech presenting Armenia’s unique natural heritage and ecotourism opportunities. This was reported by the Ministry of Environment.

In her address, Voskehat Grigoryan emphasized that Armenia lies at the intersection of two global biogeographic regions, both considered global biodiversity "hotspots".

“Our small but rich country is home to around 3,800 plant species and over 17,000 animal species, many of which are unique and rare. Protected areas cover more than 13% of Armenia’s territory, including 3 state reserves, 4 national parks, 27 state sanctuaries, and 233 natural monuments,” she noted.

Voskehat Grigoryan highlighted Khosrov Forest and Shikahogh State Reserves, Dilijan National Park, and Lake Sevan as key destinations for ecotourism.

“In the field of ecotourism, Armenia can offer everything: hiking trails, birdwatching, mountain, sports water, adventure tours, cycling routes, rural tourism, eco-educational programs.”

In terms of biodiversity conservation, Armenia is consistently implementing the following initiatives: reforms of sectoral laws and regulations related to biodiversity protection, monitoring of species, including the Caucasian leopard, bezoar goat, and Armenian mouflon, restoration projects for red deer and Lake Sevan trout (ishkhan).

According to the official statement, Voskehat Grigoryan also stressed that from October 18–30, 2026, Yerevan will host the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, and she invited international partners to visit Armenia and contribute jointly to global biodiversity strategies.
